No two North Jersey towns handle leaves the same way. Ridgewood wants loose leaves in the street on dates set for four areas. Montclair takes them only in paper bags. Franklin Lakes bans loose leaves at the curb, and Saddle River collects none at all.
This guide sets out the 2026 leaf, brush and bulk trash pickup rules for 15 Bergen and Essex towns, read from each town's own website or code on October 21, 2026. Towns shift dates for weather, so check your town's page before you rake. Where a town had not posted a 2026 schedule, we say so: Teaneck, Tenafly and Upper Saddle River had posted no 2026 leaf schedule when we checked, so their sections mainly cover brush, bulk and drop-off rules.

NJDEP's model rule: leaves stay 10 feet from the drain
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection publishes a model yard waste ordinance for towns under its Tier A municipal stormwater permit, defining yard waste as loose leaves and grass clippings.
The model bars sweeping, raking or blowing yard waste into the street except for a scheduled collection. Where a town collects loose leaves, piles must sit at least 10 feet from any storm drain inlet and go out no sooner than 7 days before a scheduled and announced collection. Where a town collects only containerized leaves, they go out in a can, bag or other container.
Each town writes its own version, and some are stricter. West Orange's 2026 notice gives the reason plainly: leaves left in the roadway too long can block drainage and create safety hazards.
Ridgewood leaf, brush and bulk pickup
Leaves. Leaf season started the week of October 12. Leaves go out only during your area's dates, listed below (My Services Lookup on the Village site finds your area), and crews collect afterward. Loose leaves go at the curb line in the street, bagged leaves on the curb, never in plastic. Keep piles 10 feet from storm drains, and keep out brush, pumpkins, hay bales and branches. A landscaper who sets leaves out off-schedule risks a summons.
- Area A: October 12 to 16, October 25 to 29, November 2 to 9, November 25 to December 1.
- Area B: October 21 to 27, November 8 to 14, December 2 to 8.
- Area C: October 14 to 20, November 4 to 11, November 27 to December 3.
- Area D: October 16 to 22, November 3 to 7, November 27 to December 1.
- Brush and bulk: Brush is not collected at the curb in leaf season. Bulk goes out on set Wednesdays (see the Recycle Coach app): up to 7 items, each no more than 100 pounds and 72 inches. Stumps, rocks, concrete and electronics are refused, construction material is limited to two 32-gallon cans, and an unscheduled pickup carries a $150 fee.
- Drop-off: The Recycling Center at 203 E. Glen Avenue takes leaves, brush and the items leaf crews refuse: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., closed Wednesdays and Sundays, proof of residency, no landscapers.

Livingston leaf, brush and bulk pickup
Leaves. Livingston runs three sections, split at Mount Pleasant Avenue and Northfield Road. Leaves stay on the lawn at the curb line until your gutter dates, listed below, and may sit in the gutter no more than 7 days before pickup, 10 feet from any inlet. Saturday, December 12 is the last day; later leaves may not be picked up. On county and state roads, including Route 10 and South Orange Avenue, only paper-bagged leaves are collected, once a week; the Public Works Garage hands out bags through December 7. Fines can go to resident and landscaper alike.
- Section 1 (north of Mount Pleasant Avenue): leaves in the gutter November 1 to 8, pickup November 9 to 14.
- Section 2 (between Mount Pleasant Avenue and Northfield Road): gutter November 9 to 15, pickup November 16 to 28.
- Section 3 (south of Northfield Road, plus West Mount Pleasant Avenue west of the traffic circle): gutter November 23 to 29, pickup November 30 to December 5.
- All sections: gutter December 7 to 12, pickup December 14 to 18.
- Brush and bulk: Brush goes out in tied bundles up to 4 feet and 50 pounds, no logs or stumps. Bulk is monthly, on your last regular garbage day of the month: five items, each no more than 150 pounds.
- What it won't take: Construction debris, bricks, concrete, soil and stumps; the township points to a contractor, a dumpster or the county's DART Transfer Station, 540 Doremus Avenue, Newark.
- Sources: Livingston 2026 leaf notices; Bulk Item Pickup, Yard Waste and Construction Debris pages.
Millburn and Short Hills leaf, brush and bulk pickup
Leaves. Millburn picks up leaves three times per zone between October and December, using your trash zone. The 2026 calendar, a guideline that bends with the weather, opens with Zone 4's put-out dates of October 16 and 17 and ends with Zone 3's collections on December 21 and 22. Put leaves in the street only on your dates, unbagged, in long rows off the curb so rainwater can flow, 10 feet from inlets. Piles mixed with grass or branches are left, and Essex County collects on county roads.
- Brush: Vegetative waste runs March 1 to October 31 on your zone's first trash day: branches up to 3 feet long and 4 inches thick, bundles of 30 pounds or less, four bundles or containers a week, no stumps, logs or lumber.
- Bulk: There is no curbside bulk day; anything not in a trash or recycling container goes to the Town Yard. Large appliances are picked up by appointment on Tuesdays.
- Drop-off: The Town Yard behind Public Works (enter from Old Short Hills Road via Municipal Lot 16) is open weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to noon, for residents, two loads a week.
- Sources: Millburn 2026 leaf schedule; 2026 Public Works Guide; Sanitation page.
Montclair leaf, brush and bulk pickup
Leaves. Montclair collects leaves only in biodegradable paper bags on your regular recycling day from October 15 to December 1. No plastic bags or rigid containers. Bags over 50 pounds are left and reported to Code Enforcement, and wet bags are not collected.
- Brush: Branches go out on recycling day: less than 3 inches thick, cut to 36 inches or less, tied in bundles of 25 pounds or less, up to three bundles a collection. Logs, stumps, soil and bricks are not collected.
- Bulk: Up to three large items a household, on your section's bulky waste date on the township calendar, set out between 6 p.m. the night before and 6 a.m. Items in bags or boxes are not taken. One can of small-repair construction debris, up to 75 pounds, is allowed; concrete, rocks and dirt are not.
- Drop-off: Recycling and electronics go to the Public Works Yard, 219 N. Fullerton Avenue, Saturdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Sources: Montclair leaf, bulky waste and collection map pages.
West Orange leaf, brush and bulk pickup
Leaves. For 2026, West Orange posts weekly updates on where crews go next instead of a season-long schedule. Loose leaves may go in the street from October 19 to December 6. Collection starts in Zone 1 on November 2 and moves through Zones 2, 3 and 4, about two weeks a zone. Keep piles 10 feet from drains, put them out within 7 to 10 days of expected collection, and keep out branches, grass and trash. Bagged leaves are collected weekly through December 31 if you call DPW at 973-325-4067.
- Brush: Small bushes and branches go out with household refuse, tied, under 4 feet and 60 pounds, never in paper bags.
- Bulk: Bulky items go out weekly on your zone's second collection day, each under 300 pounds. Small-repair waste is limited to three receptacles or bundles a month; renovation waste, windows, roofing, siding, concrete and logs are prohibited.
- Sources: West Orange Leaf Collection 2026 notice; Residential Refuse & Bulk Collection and Bulky Trash Items pages.
Essex Fells leaf, brush and bulk pickup
Leaves. Unbagged leaves may go to the curb from Monday, October 19 to Friday, December 4; outside those dates leaves must be in biodegradable paper bags. Rake them into rows across your frontage, no more than 3 feet into the road or 3 feet high, never on a speed hump, 10 feet from drains and hydrants and 20 feet from intersections. Keep branches, grass, hay bales, pumpkins and flowers out. The borough warned on October 16 that leaves set out early can draw a summons.
- Brush: Branches go out in tied bundles up to 5 feet and 50 pounds, twigs in containers; call DPW at 973-226-3400 to have them collected.
- Bulk: The borough does not contract for garbage removal, so there is no borough bulk day; residents arrange their own garbage pickup.
- Drop-off: Residents take recycling to the Recycling Center, 307 Runnymede Road, which is closed Sundays and holidays; call DPW at 973-226-3400 for its hours.
- Sources: Essex Fells 2026 Fall Leaf Letter, October 16 notice, Public Works page.
Glen Rock leaf, brush and bulk pickup
Leaves. Glen Rock schedules leaf pickup by voting district, posted in the printed borough calendar; the online calendar showed no leaf dates for October when we checked on October 21. Loose leaves and biodegradable bags are both collected; residents on the county roads (Maple Avenue, Prospect Street, Lincoln Avenue) are asked to bag.
- Brush: The only 2026 curbside brush pickup the borough lists was the May spring cleanup. Otherwise, branches and yard waste go to the Recycling Center, which takes vegetative waste all year.
- Bulk: Rubbish is collected monthly, the first Wednesday on the North/West route and the third on the South/East route: eight items, bundles no longer than 4 feet or heavier than 40 pounds, never in reusable cans. Soil, rocks, propane tanks, construction materials and concrete are refused. Rubbish set out on the wrong Wednesday must be gone by 8 a.m. or the owner may get a summons.
- Drop-off: The Recycling & Compost Center is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., closed Wednesdays and Sundays.
- Sources: Glen Rock Leaf Removal, Public Works, Recycling & Compost Center and calendar pages.
Wyckoff leaf, brush and bulk pickup
Leaves. Wyckoff's 2026 calendar marks October 19 as the start of fall leaf collection, running from District 1 to District 8. Wyckoff wants leaves along the edge of your property, not in the street, 10 feet from storm drains, and not under shrubs or around signposts. Piles with branches or twigs are not collected.
- Brush: Monthly vegetative waste pickup ended with the October 1 and 2 collection; branches go in 3- to 4-foot bundles, no thicker than 4 inches. In Wyckoff, leaves and grass are not vegetative waste.
- Bulk: Bulk goes out only on the last Thursday of the month, and only if you schedule it by the Friday before, online or at 201-891-7000, ext. 1010. The limit is two items. Appliances go separately, by Wednesday appointment, and that pickup is suspended during fall leaf collection. Construction debris, windows, doors and pianos need private arrangements.
- Drop-off: The Recycling & Conservation Centers, 476 West Main Street, take leaves, grass and brush, Monday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Sources: Wyckoff 2026 calendar; Vegetative Waste, Recycling & Trash, Bulk Collection and large metal items pages.
Ho-Ho-Kus leaf, brush and bulk pickup
Leaves. Ho-Ho-Kus makes three pickups in each of four zones, on or after the dates below. Rake leaves into the street the day before your date, never more than 7 days before, 10 feet from drains. Bags must be biodegradable. Piles mixed with trash, shrubs or sticks are not picked up. After your street's third pickup, only bagged leaves are collected, until noon on Monday, December 21; after that, the DPW collects no leaves.
- Zone 1: November 16, December 7, December 18.
- Zone 2: November 11, December 2, December 16.
- Zone 3: November 2, November 19, December 10.
- Zone 4: November 5, November 24, December 14.
- Brush and bulk: From November 1 to March 31, yard waste goes out only on your monthly Saturday bulk day, in containers of 50 pounds or less. Bulk is one Saturday a month; construction debris is limited to two 50-pound bundles up to 4 feet.
- Drop-off: The Recycling Center at 26 Hollywood Avenue is open Monday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and a fall cleanup trash truck is at the DPW garage Saturday, October 24, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Franklin Lakes leaf, brush and bulk pickup
Leaves. Leaves may not go to the curb loose. Borough code section 411-22 bans placing leaves or grass at the curb unless containerized, with fines up to $1,000. Leaves go to the Leaf Compost Drop-Off Facility on DeKorte Drive, across from the Police Station: weekdays 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. (call 201-891-4333 first; the gate stays closed) and fall weekends through December 6. Landscapers may not use it.
- Brush: Curbside yard waste runs April 1 to November 30: grass, plants, limbs and twigs in brown paper yard bags or unlined containers, each 50 pounds or less. No leaves, stumps or plastic bags.
- Bulk: Bulk is collected the first and third Thursday of each month (November 5 and 19, December 3 and 17) if you request it online by 10 a.m. the day before. Up to three items; no construction materials, appliances or pianos.
- Drop-off: The Recycling Depot at 500 DeKorte Drive takes metal, appliances and electronics from residents, including Saturdays 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Sources: Franklin Lakes 2026 newsletter; Bulk Waste, Leaf Compost and Recycling Depot pages; Code 411-22.
Saddle River leaf, brush and bulk pickup
Leaves. Saddle River does not collect leaves, grass, brush or yard waste. The borough suggests composting or mulching leaves on site, or arranging lawful private recycling, and its code (section 187-6) bars yard waste from the roadway, drains and the public right-of-way. It runs no public recycling center.
- Bulk: Bulky pickup comes once a year by route; in 2026 it was October 10 and October 17, so it has passed. It took small furniture and small bundles of construction material up to 4 feet, not electronics, tires or appliances.
- Construction debris: Owners must recycle it and show weight slips to the Construction Code Office before a permanent certificate of occupancy (section 187-6.1).
- Sources: Saddle River Recycling/Garbage page; 2026 recycling schedule.
Upper Saddle River leaf, brush and bulk pickup
Leaves. The borough website lists no leaf collection (a search for "leaf" found nothing on October 21), and brush pickup excludes leaves. Call Borough Hall at 201-327-2196 before raking to the curb.
- Brush: Brush is picked up every other week from April 1 to October 31, 2026, in tied bundles or brown paper bags: no leaves or grass, nothing over 4 inches thick or 5 feet long, no stumps or root balls.
- Bulk: The 2026 schedule lists curbside bulky trash on four Fridays: March 13, June 12, October 16 and December 11. The borough's own page lists March, June, September and November instead, and its notice of a rescheduled bulk date would not open on October 21, so call 201-327-2196 to confirm the December date. Appliances go out monthly by appointment at the same number, ext. 221, booked at least three days ahead.
- Drop-off: The Recycling Depot is open Saturdays, 8 a.m. to noon.
- Sources: Upper Saddle River Garbage & Recycling page; 2026 garbage, recycling and brush schedules.
Paramus leaf, brush and bulk pickup
Leaves. Paramus vacuums loose leaves and grass from the curb line from October 5 to November 29, 2026. The machines cannot take sticks, so a pile with branches or twigs is skipped until it is cleared. After November 29 no one may put leaves in the street, and vegetative waste rules apply: covered containers or paper bags, 40 pounds or less, no plastic.
- Brush: Branches go out on recycling day, in 4-foot lengths tied in small bundles, up to 10 bundles; nothing over 8 inches thick, and no stumps or roots.
- Bulk: Chairs, tables, rugs and other household items go out on the end-of-week trash day. Appliances need an appointment. Cabinets, sheetrock, shingles, wood and fencing are never collected.
- Drop-off: The Recycling Center, proof of residency required, takes electronics and metal: weekdays 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. (6 p.m. on Wednesdays) and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Sources: Paramus Garbage & Trash Pickup, Materials Disposal Guide and Recycling Center pages.
Teaneck leaf, brush and bulk pickup
Leaves. Teaneck tracks leaf collection on a live map on its Leaf Pickup page: blue for collecting now, yellow for next, purple for not yet, and red for collected at least once and due back. We found no 2026 leaf notice in township news on October 21.
- Brush: The garden debris season runs weekly from April 2 to October 5: branches cut to 4 feet or less, tied in bundles under 50 pounds, and grass in reusable containers or paper bags. Landscapers must follow the same rules.
- Bulk: The township does not collect solid waste from private properties; each owner hires a private hauler, so bulk goes through yours.
- Drop-off: The Recycling Depot, 1600 River Road, is open Friday to Sunday, 7 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Residents may drop appliances and electronics there, and garden debris needs no bags, as long as it is not in plastic.
- Sources: Teaneck Leaf Pickup, Garden Debris Pickup, Recycling Depot and Garbage Collectors pages.
Tenafly leaf, brush and bulk pickup
Leaves. We found no 2026 leaf collection schedule on the borough website on October 21. Ask the Public Works Office, 107 Grove Street.
- Brush: The borough's garbage contractor, Waste Industries, collects garden waste and branches placed at the curb the night before your garbage day. Branches may be no more than 2 inches thick, tied in bundles no longer than 3 feet, or in one-bushel containers of 30 pounds or less.
- Bulk: There is no regular bulk day. Residents call Waste Industries (201-567-3100) for a special pickup, for a fee based on what is collected.
- Drop-off: The Recycling and Convenience Center, 153 Grove Street, opens Monday and Friday to Sunday, 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with a resident decal. It takes yard waste, tree trimmings, furniture and appliances, but not construction debris such as lumber, decking or roofing.
- Sources: Tenafly Grass and Branch Disposal, Special Collection of Bulky Waste, Recycling and Convenience Center and Public Works pages.
What towns generally won't take
The same few things are refused, or left at the curb, across the towns above:
- Pumpkins and hay bales. Ridgewood and Essex Fells both exclude them from leaf collection, and Ridgewood adds corn stalks.
- Branches in a leaf pile. Paramus, Ho-Ho-Kus, Wyckoff and Millburn skip mixed piles; brush has its own program.
- Branches over the limit. Thickness limits run from 2 inches in Tenafly to 8 inches in Paramus, and length limits from 3 feet in Tenafly, Millburn and Montclair to 5 feet in Essex Fells and Upper Saddle River. Stumps, logs and roots are refused everywhere that lists them.
- Leaves after the last date. Paramus ends loose collection November 29, Livingston takes leaves set out through December 12, and Ho-Ho-Kus stops at noon on December 21.
- Bulk off schedule. Glen Rock can summons rubbish left out on the wrong day, Wyckoff needs scheduling by the Friday before, and Ridgewood charges for an unscheduled pickup.
- Construction debris. Livingston, Paramus and Wyckoff refuse it; Ridgewood, Montclair, West Orange and Ho-Ho-Kus accept one to three cans or bundles from a small repair.
When the town won't take it: private haul-away
Most of the time the town program is the right answer. A private crew makes sense for what falls outside it: a heavy leaf drop after your last pickup, a cleanout bigger than a bulk limit, or debris from a small remodel.
Our junk removal and leaf haul-away covers leaves, household items and small remodel debris for homes and businesses in Bergen, Passaic, Essex and Hudson counties, with a written quote before work starts. It does not cover branches, brush, stumps, hazardous waste, appliances that hold refrigerant, or electronics. If the leaves are in the gutters, that is gutter cleaning, which we do for homes and businesses.
