What are your gutters doing?

Gutters tell you exactly what's wrong if you read the signs. A run that dips in the middle, a corner that drips a rust streak down the wall, water sheeting over the front lip in a normal rain, a downspout that gushes at the seam instead of the bottom — each points to a specific failure and a specific fix. Why the run is dropping — and what actually holds it

A sagging or pulling-away gutter is almost never the gutter's fault — it's what the gutter is hanging on, and what's been sitting inside it. Older systems were nailed up with long spikes driven through a ferrule into the fascia. Spikes work loose over years of thermal movement and freeze-thaw, the nail head backs out, and the run starts to droop. Load makes it worse fast: a clogged gutter holds standing water, and water weighs more than eight pounds a gallon, so a packed run carries a constant load its fasteners were never meant to hold — which is exactly what levers a spike out or splits a tired fascia board.

The fix isn't a longer nail. We re-hang failing runs on hidden hangers — a bracket that clips the front lip and screws through the back of the trough into the fascia and, where we can reach them, the rafter tails — set roughly every 24 inches, tighter on runs that carry a winter ice load. We also re-establish the pitch: the industry-standard slope is about a quarter-inch of drop for every ten feet of run toward the downspout, and a run that has flattened or reverse-pitched from sagging holds water instead of shedding it. But if the fascia behind the gutter has gone soft, none of that holds — which is the next section.

Leaks at the joints

Seams, corners, and the honest limit of a reseal

A seamless gutter rarely leaks in the middle of a run, because there is no joint there to leak — the whole point of seamless is that the trough is one continuous piece. What leaks are the connection points every system has: the inside and outside corners (the mitered joints), the downspout outlets, and on older sectional gutters, every ten-foot seam where two stock lengths were lapped and caulked. Those joints live in constant motion — metal expands and contracts with every hot day and cold night — and the factory sealant eventually cracks and lets go. A rust streak running down the wall under a corner is the classic tell.

When the gutter itself is sound, resealing a joint is a real, lasting repair — done right. That means scraping out the old cracked sealant down to clean metal, drying it, and rebedding the joint with a flexible polyurethane or tripolymer gutter sealant rated for the expansion-and-contraction cycle, not a bead of hardware-store silicone that cracks again in a season. Where we'll be straight with you is the old sectional system that's weeping at half its seams: resealing one joint on a run whose sealant is failing everywhere just buys a few months before the next one goes. At that point re-sectioning or moving to a seamless run is the smarter spend, and we'll say so instead of selling you a tube of caulk at a time.

Overflow, downspouts & drainage

Where the water is really going — and the damage it's doing

When a gutter overflows, the water doesn't just spill off the front — a surprising amount runs backward, behind the trough, down the fascia, and into the soffit. It's the same kind of wrong-direction water that does the most hidden damage on a house: left alone it rots the fascia the gutter hangs on, then the soffit behind it, and eventually gets into the wall. The most common cause is the simplest — a clog. Leaves and shingle grit pack the trough and the downspout outlet, water backs up and sheets over, and the standing weight starts the sag-and-pull cycle all over again.

The downspout is half the system and gets half the neglect. A clog jammed in the outlet or an elbow, or a joint that's pulled apart, dumps the whole roof's runoff straight down the wall or at the foundation instead of carrying it away. We clear and reconnect the downspout path, and check that it actually discharges away from the house — a downspout draining right at the foundation is how that water ends up eroding the grade and finding the basement. Clearing the clog, resetting the pitch, and correcting the discharge is often the entire repair; if a chronic clog is the real story, we'll talk honestly about whether guards or a cleaning schedule fits your tree cover rather than defaulting you into an add-on.

Ice load, ice dams, and what a gutter can't fix

Winter is what tears gutters off a North Jersey house. A clogged or poorly pitched gutter holds water that freezes into a solid block of ice, and that weight — plus the ice building up along the eave — pries the run off the fascia, bends the front edge, and rips out hangers. When we repair a gutter on an exposed roof, we repair it to carry that load: heavier hanger spacing, sound fascia to anchor into, and a clear, correctly pitched path so water drains before it can freeze in the trough.

What we won't do is tell you a gutter repair will stop your ice dams, because it won't. An ice dam forms when heat escaping into the attic melts snow on the roof, and that meltwater refreezes when it hits the cold eave — an insulation-and-ventilation problem upstream of the gutter, not a gutter defect. Clogged, torn-up gutters can make the mess worse, but fixing them doesn't address the cause. The real question is never whether a gutter can be repaired — a seam can be resealed, a run re-hung, a downspout reconnected, a rotted length swapped out. The question is whether repairing is the smart spend. A sound aluminum system with one sagging run and a couple of weeping corners is an easy repair that buys you many more years. An old sectional system that's leaking at half its seams, pulling away where the fascia has rotted, and pitting through with pinholes is throwing good money after bad — patching it just moves the next failure a few feet down the line.
