Water Damage Restoration in Little Ferry, NJ
The biggest flood claim file in the county, and no gauge anywhere names this borough. What that leaves you with, and what the work is. Extraction and structural drying first, then mold remediation, then the rebuild, with no hand-off to a stranger.
FEMA has 1,390 National Flood Insurance Program claims on record for this borough — more than any other Bergen County community, ahead of Lodi, ahead of Hackensack, ahead of every township on the Ramapo. It is a square and a half of ground, and it holds the county's largest flood file.
Seven hundred and one of those claims are dated 2012. Six hundred and ninety-nine of them are coded Hurricane Sandy. Half of everything on record here, over forty-six years, is one night in October — and that is genuinely unusual for a place with no ocean in front of it. Of the 82 New Jersey communities with 500 or more claims, 33 have a single year holding half their file, and 30 of those 33 are in Ocean, Monmouth, Atlantic or Cape May. The exceptions are Hoboken, the Meadowlands district and this borough.
What that statistic is usually used for is to say something about 2012. This page is going to use it for the opposite purpose, because the arithmetic has a second half that is much more useful to anybody who owns a building here now: take 2012 out and there are still 689 claims left.

Take one night out and there are still 689 claims
Six hundred and eighty-nine claims spread across forty-five other years is roughly fifteen a year, every year, from weather that was not Sandy. Hurricane Irene accounts for 249 of them, a December nor'easter for 105, Hurricane Ida for 82 and the April 2007 nor'easter for 41. The rest is ordinary.
That distinction matters because the two halves are different problems and they get confused constantly. A surge event is a once-in-a-generation arrival of a great deal of water very quickly, and the honest planning response to it is elevation, relocation of what matters and insurance. The other half is a recurring, unspectacular wetting of the same low ground, and the honest planning response to that is about materials, drainage, where the mechanical equipment sits and how quickly the drying starts.
Almost everything written about flooding in this borough is about the first half. The second half is what actually turns up, and it turns up without a name on it and without a week of forecasting in front of it.
There is a data point that belongs with that. FEMA's adjusters coded 478 claims here to rainfall or snowmelt simply accumulating, 451 to tidal water overflowing and 367 to a stream or river leaving its banks. Rainfall leads. In a borough whose flood reputation is entirely tidal, the largest single cause code on the file is water that fell out of the sky faster than the ground and the drains could take it, and that is the mechanism that does not care what the tide is doing.
No gauge anywhere in the state names this borough
There is a document that a homeowner on a New Jersey river can look up before a storm: the Weather Service's flood-impact statements, which say in plain language what is under water at a given gauge reading, street by street. They are the single most useful public thing in this whole subject and almost nobody knows they exist.
Little Ferry does not have one. Not a thin one — none. Every impact statement published on all 221 gauges in the cached New Jersey and border set was searched for this borough's name on 17 September 2026, and there is no hit anywhere. Neither is Moonachie, next door. The community with the largest flood claim file in Bergen County does not appear by name in the Weather Service's impact text at all.
The nearest instrument, the Hackensack River gauge at Hackensack city, publishes flood categories and nothing else: zero impact statements. The nearest gauge that does publish them sits well upstream at New Milford, above the tide, and its statements name New Milford streets, which is exactly what you would expect and no help at all down here. The reasons are not mysterious — impact statements get written where somebody has reported what a reading looked like on the ground, and a tidal river with a flood defence system behind it is harder to describe that way than a brook with a bridge on it.
The practical consequence is worth being blunt about. Up on the Saddle River or the Pascack, a homeowner can learn one number and know roughly what it means for their block. Here there is no such number to learn, so the substitutes are your own building's history, the tide and surge forecasting the Weather Service issues for the estuary, and the plain fact that this ground has flooded 1,390 recorded times. Anyone who offers you a Little Ferry flood reading to watch has got it from somewhere other than the gauge network.

Cause codes are counted individually against the borough's total rather than as a partition: FEMA's dictionary allows more than one cause code on a claim, so the three figures shown are not meant to add to 1,390. The 2012 concentration was tested against every rated community in the state rather than against the towns in this batch — Little Ferry is one of 33 communities with 500+ claims where a single year holds half the file, and the 33rd of them by share, so it is unusual for its geography and not a record.
One property. Not one percent — one
FEMA keeps a file of every building the federal government has helped buy out, raise or floodproof. For this borough it contains a single property: one house, raised, under a grant in program year 2013. One, against 1,390 claims.
That is not a criticism of anybody, and it is not a thing a homeowner can do much about on their own — those grants are applied for by municipalities and awarded in rounds. It is simply the context that a Little Ferry building sits in, and it is worth knowing because two Bergen municipalities in this same county have had 32 and 65 properties bought or raised respectively. Whatever structural answer has been applied elsewhere in the county has not been applied here at anything like the same scale.
What follows from that, practically, is that the answer in this borough is almost always going to be a building-level one, decided by whoever owns the building. Which is a reason to make it properly. There is a version of flood repair that puts the room back exactly as it was and waits, and there is a version that takes the opportunity of an open wall to change what is low down: the height at which absorbent material starts, what the below-grade openings are made of, whether the mechanical equipment can be moved up or onto a platform, and whether the finished part of a cellar needs to be finished at all. The second version costs more thought at the time and much less the next time.
The borough's Community Rating System class of 7, and the 15 percent discount it earns inside the mapped high-risk zone, is the one piece of public work that has clearly been done here — only 109 of New Jersey's 560 listed communities hold any class at all, and 35 of them hold this one. What the work is on ground this low
Three things about this borough's building stock change the job, and they are all in the claim file rather than in the storm.
Ninety-nine of the coded claims here are on a building recorded with no basement at all: one coded row in ten, against roughly one in fifteen across Bergen County. That sounds like good news and it changes the work rather than reducing it. Where there is no basement the water that gets in is at living level, so what it reaches is finished floor, base of wall, kitchen cabinetry, and everything that was on the floor because there was nowhere below to put it. There is no sacrificial room underneath to take the damage, and the drying happens in the space people live in, which makes containment, the noise and the timeline part of the problem.
Where there is a below-grade space, 377 of them were finished. A finished basement is slower than an unfinished one for a reason that is invisible from the doorway: water wicks up behind the base trim into the bottom of the drywall and then into the stud bay, the insulation in that bay holds it, and the wall reads dry to the hand while the cavity is not. The decision is how far up the wall the material comes off so what is left can actually be dried, and it gets made with a meter and the trim already removed.
And the water itself deserves a determination rather than an assumption. Low ground near a tidal river that has taken water off the street has a fair chance of being contaminated rather than clean, and that determination decides how much of the building leaves in a skip rather than being dried in place. It is made by inspecting the water and the building, not by reading the weather report, and it is worth asking for in writing before anything is demolished. The last thing is timing, and it is specific to this ground. On a tidal river the water can come back on the next cycle, so a basement emptied while the event is still running can take water again the same night. That is a scheduling question as much as a technical one, and it is the first thing worth discussing when you call.
