Storm Door Installation
Storm doors are the secondary exterior door installed in front of a primary entry door — providing a second thermal barrier, screened ventilation in shoulder seasons, pet/kid containment, and (for security models) break-in deterrence. We install all four main storm door categories: full-view glass for entries showcasing visibility and natural light; mid-view for general-purpose use; retractable-screen for shoulder-season airflow; and security with deadbolt-compatible reinforced frames for urban NJ break-in deterrence. We DON'T install storm doors over sun-facing entries with glass primary doors — heat buildup between doors can damage primary door finish and cracks glass; we'll tell you honestly at the estimate if your situation is wrong for a storm door. Are storm doors worth it in NJ?A storm door is the simplest exterior door in the trade and the one most often bought wrong. It hangs in front of your entry door in a frame screwed to the brickmold, it weighs a fraction of what the primary door weighs, and it is asked to survive thousands of closings a season, a gust catching it on an exposed porch, and being left standing open in July with the sun on it. Most storm doors that fail early do not fail at the door. They fail at the closer, at the hinge rail's attachment to soft trim, or at the decision to hang one in a place it never belonged.
We install storm doors across New Jersey as their own visit or alongside an entry door replacement, and this page is about picking the right one: which configuration matches how you'll actually use the opening, what the hardware does, how the opening gets measured, and the one real thermal risk that comes with putting a second door in front of your first. There is a manufacturer-documented version of that risk and a folk-wisdom version, and they are not the same — we go through the documented one below.
Full-view, partial-view, and retractable-screen
Full-view is glass over essentially the whole door. You buy it when the entry door behind it is worth looking at — a stained fiberglass door with decorative glass, a painted panel door with good hardware — or when the entryway is dark and you want the daylight. Ventilation on a full-view comes from swapping the glass panel for a screen panel seasonally, or from a self-storing design where the glass and screen live in the door and slide past each other. Full-view puts the most glass in front of your primary door, which matters for the heat discussion further down.
Partial-view, sometimes sold as mid-view or high-view, splits the door: glass in the upper portion, a solid kick panel below. It is the practical default on a house with kids, dogs, deliveries and a wheelbarrow that occasionally clips the door. The kick panel takes the abuse that would otherwise be a glass replacement, and the lower solid section stiffens the door. High-view versions raise the glass line so the solid panel covers more of the door; low-view versions do the opposite for houses that want more light.
Retractable-screen doors keep the glass fixed and hide the screen in a cassette in the frame, deploying it when you lower the glass. Nothing to store in a garage, nothing to swap in spring and fall, no panel to lean against a wall and crack. This is the configuration for people who want ventilation without a seasonal chore, and for openings where there is nowhere sensible to store a spare panel.
Security storm doors are a different product wearing the same name: a heavier frame, a reinforced or steel-mesh grille, a deadbolt-capable lock, and hinges and strikes engineered against prying rather than against wind. They read as a security door with a screen in it rather than a storm door with a lock. On ground-floor entries on urban blocks they are genuinely useful, and they change the measuring and installation conversation because the frame anchoring has to be into something structural rather than into brickmold.
The heat trap — the one situation where we say no
Put a storm door in front of an entry door and you create a sealed cavity a few inches deep between two sheets of exterior building material, one of which is glass. On a south- or west-facing entry with no porch roof over it, that cavity gets very hot on a summer afternoon. This is real and it is documented by the entry-door manufacturers themselves, not by installer folklore — but the documented version is narrower and more useful than the version people repeat.
Therma-Tru's published integrated limited warranty for its fiberglass and steel door systems is the clearest example. It states that PVC lite frames and simulated divided lite bars "are not recommended to be installed behind a storm door or to be painted dark colors, if exposed to direct sunlight," and it separately excludes from glass coverage "stresses from localized heat which cause excessive temperature differentials over the glass." In the same paragraph it says plainly that "the use of a properly installed and properly vented storm door along with a Therma-Tru door system does not void this Limited Warranty." Read together, that is a precise engineering statement: the failure mode is heat concentrated on the plastic components around a door's glass, and ventilation and finish color are the variables you control.
So the honest rule is not "never put a storm door on a glass entry door." It is: the risk rises with direct unshaded sun, with dark finishes, with large amounts of glass and plastic lite framing in the primary door, and with a storm door that cannot vent. It falls off sharply under a covered porch, on a north or east elevation, with a lighter finish, and with a door designed to breathe. We look at your entry's orientation, its overhang, its finish color and what its glass is framed in before we recommend anything, and we read your entry door's own warranty language with you — because it is that manufacturer's document, not ours, that decides what you are covered for. When the combination is bad we tell you at the estimate and quote a retractable-screen or vented configuration instead, or nothing at all.
Closers, wind chains, and the hardware that decides whether you keep the door
The pneumatic closer is the part that makes a storm door tolerable or intolerable, and it is the part nobody asks about. It has a hold-open feature — usually a small washer you slide along the shaft — and an adjustment screw at the barrel end that sets closing speed. Two closers, top and bottom, on any door that sees real traffic or real wind: one closer twists the door in its frame over time and lets the top corner lead, which is how the latch stops meeting the strike. Closers are consumables. They lose damping after several seasons and get replaced, which is a ten-minute job and not a reason to replace a door.
The wind chain is the small cable between the door and the jamb that stops the door from opening past its designed arc. It is the cheapest part on the door and the one that prevents the most expensive failure: a gust catching an open storm door, hyperextending it, and tearing the hinge rail out of the brickmold or bending the door itself. If a storm door's hinge side has ever been ripped loose, a missing or slack wind chain was almost always involved. Exposed entries with no wind break get the chain adjusted short.
The latch and lock deserve one look. Standard storm door latches are a keyed lever or a push-button set in a mortise that is much shallower than a primary door's. Alignment is everything: a door that has drifted a quarter inch out of square will latch stiffly for a month and then not at all. On security models the lock is a real deadbolt and the strike has to land in a reinforced jamb section, which is why those doors ship as a unit rather than as a slab.
The rest of the small hardware — the sweep at the bottom, the corner seal at the bottom hinge, the drip cap over the head — is what actually stops water getting between the two doors. A storm door with a torn sweep funnels wind-driven rain onto the primary door's threshold, which is worse than having no storm door at all. We replace sweeps and corner seals as service work on doors we didn't install.
Measuring, hinge side and out-swing clearance
Storm doors are sold to the opening, not to the primary door. What matters is the inside dimensions of the brickmold or exterior casing — the frame the storm door's own frame screws into — measured at top, middle and bottom for width and at both jambs for height, because old NJ entries are rarely square. Most residential storm doors come in a few nominal sizes with an expander at the bottom to take up variance, and that expander is what makes an out-of-square opening work. When the opening is genuinely undersized, oversized, or out of square beyond what an expander absorbs, the answer is a custom-sized door rather than shimming a standard one and hoping.
Hinge side is a decision, not an inheritance. A storm door does not have to hinge on the same side as the entry door, and there are good reasons to flip it: hinging it away from the prevailing wind so a gust pushes it closed instead of open; hinging it so the door doesn't swing across the top step or into a railing; hinging it so it doesn't block the path from the driveway. Almost every storm door is field-reversible, and picking the side at install costs nothing while changing it later costs a visit.
Then there is the geometry nobody checks until the door is on the truck. A storm door swings out, and out is where the stoop, the railing, the storm-door-swing arc and any adjacent wall live. On a shallow stoop the door can swing past the edge of the tread, which is a fall hazard and a code-adjacent problem, not a preference. Where a sidelight, a column or a return wall sits within the arc, the door needs a narrower unit or the other hinge side. And the storm door's frame has to have something solid to screw into — soft, rotted or hollow brickmold gets replaced before a door hangs on it, because a hinge rail lag-screwed to punky wood is the failure we get called back for most.
Panels, screens and living with the door
On a panel-swap door, the glass insert and the screen insert are separate parts that trade places twice a year. That means storage — a spare panel leaned against a garage wall gets stepped on, and a cracked tempered insert is a real replacement. If there is nowhere good to store a panel, buy self-storing or retractable instead. Self-storing doors keep both the glass and the screen in the door and slide one past the other; you get a smaller ventilation opening than a full-view swap, and you never carry a panel anywhere.
Screen mesh in a storm door is the same trade as any other screen and it is worth spending on the right mesh, because a storm door screen is the one a dog pushes against. Pet-resistant polyester mesh on a door with a dog, small-insect mesh near water, standard fiberglass everywhere else. We re-mesh storm door inserts at the Garfield shop the same way we do window screens, so a torn panel is a counter job rather than a new door.
Maintenance is genuinely two things a year. Wipe and inspect the sweep and the corner seal — those are the parts that decide whether water reaches your primary door's threshold. And check that the door still latches without being pulled: a door that needs a tug is a door whose closers or hinge rail have started to move, and adjusting it takes minutes at that stage and a new door two winters later.
