Window Screen Repair + Replacement
Window screens are the most commonly damaged window component in NJ — winter wind, summer storms, pets, and kids all take their toll. We custom-fabricate and install replacement screens for any window or door brand: standard fiberglass mesh (most common, lowest cost), aluminum mesh (longer-lasting, slightly higher cost), pet-resistant Phifer PetScreen (7× tear-resistant for cats + dogs), BetterVue + UltraVue invisible-mesh options (premium clarity), solar screens (cut solar heat gain and glare on sun-hit elevations), and security screens (steel-mesh + reinforced frame for break-in deterrence). We measure on-site, fabricate at our Garfield shop, install on return visit — typically 5-7 business days from quote to install for stock-size frames. Garfield glass & screen shop — walk-in drop-offScreens are the highest-turnover part of a window and the one most homeowners assume has to be replaced whole. Usually it doesn't. A screen is three separate things — an aluminum or vinyl frame, a length of mesh, and a rubber spline that wedges the mesh into a channel around the frame — and in most failures only the mesh and the spline are finished. We re-screen existing frames and build new ones from scratch for every window and door style in the New Jersey housing stock: double-hung half-screens, casement inside-mount screens, awning and hopper screens, slider and patio-door screens, storm-door inserts, and the odd sizes that come out of pre-war Bergen and Passaic County houses where nothing is a stock dimension.
This page is the statewide version of the work. We do it two ways, and the cheaper one is the one nobody advertises: you take the frames out yourself and bring them to our Garfield shop, or we come measure and install. Both get the same mesh and the same fabrication — the difference is whether you're paying for a vehicle and a technician to stand in your living room. Screens come out of almost every window without tools, which is exactly why the drop-off path exists.
Re-screen the frame, or build a new one
The first thing we look at is the frame, not the hole in the mesh. Aluminum screen frame is a thin extruded channel held square by four plastic or aluminum corner keys. If the extrusion is straight, the corners are tight, and the spline channel isn't split or chewed, the frame is fine and the job is a re-screen: cut the old spline out, peel the mesh, lay new mesh over the frame, roll fresh spline into the channel with a spline roller, trim flush. It takes minutes per screen and the frame you get back is the frame you handed over.
The frame gets rebuilt when it can't hold tension anymore. The usual disqualifiers: a long side bowed inward because someone rolled the last spline too tight or pushed the screen back into the opening at an angle; corner keys cracked so the frame racks out of square; white corrosion blooming along an aluminum extrusion from years of salt air or sprinkler overspray; a spline channel torn open where a previous repair used oversized spline. Any of those and we cut new extrusion to the opening, key the corners, and mesh it — you get a new screen sized to your window rather than a stock unit that almost fits.
Spline is its own quiet failure point. It is a solid or hollow vinyl cord sized to the frame's channel, and it hardens, shrinks and cracks under UV long before the mesh does. A screen that keeps popping loose along one edge on a windy day is almost always a spline problem, not a mesh problem. Matching diameter matters: undersized spline won't hold tension and the mesh ripples, oversized spline splits the channel and bows the frame. We carry the common sizes and match to the channel rather than to whatever came out.
The other parts we replace as a matter of course are the small ones people forget: pull tabs, finger latches, plungers and the spring-loaded pins on casement and awning screens, and the leaf springs on double-hung half-screens that hold the frame against the blind stop. A screen that fits perfectly and won't stay put is nearly always missing hardware, not mis-sized.
Mesh families — what each one is actually for
Standard fiberglass is the default and the right answer for most openings. Vinyl-coated fiberglass yarn, flexible, glare-free, forgiving of a knee going through it. Phifer's own selection guide rates it good across durability, insect protection, airflow and clarity — good at everything, best at nothing. If the screen tore because a branch came down or a kid leaned on it, this is what goes back in.
Aluminum mesh is stiffer and holds a flat plane on tall openings where fiberglass bellies out. It won't stretch and sag the way fiberglass can on a full-height slider screen, and it doesn't melt against a hot grill on a deck. The tradeoff is that aluminum dents permanently — a dog's paw leaves a dimple you can't push back out.
Pet-resistant mesh is a heavy vinyl-coated polyester woven from far thicker yarn than standard screening. In Phifer's own Screen Selection Guide, PetScreen is the only product in the line that earns the top "Best" mark for pet resistance — it shares its "Best" durability mark with seven other heavy-duty, small-insect and sun-control screens, so it is not uniquely the toughest mesh Phifer makes, it is uniquely the one built for claws. It is the mesh worth installing on a door a dog leans on. It is visibly heavier and slightly darker than standard mesh, which some homeowners notice on a picture window and nobody notices on a patio door.
Small-insect mesh — sold as no-see-um mesh, 20x20, or aluminum tiny-insect screening — uses a tighter weave to stop the biting midges and gnats that walk straight through standard 18x16. It matters near the Meadowlands, along the Passaic and Hackensack river corridors, on lake properties in Sussex and Morris, and anywhere back-bay in Ocean and Monmouth. The tighter weave costs you some airflow and some light; on a screened porch that's a fair trade, on a bedroom window it usually isn't.
Solar or sun-shading mesh is a different product class: heavy vinyl-coated yarn woven dense enough to intercept sun before it reaches the glass. Phifer publishes SunTex 80/90 as blocking 80-90% of the sun's heat and glare, the 90 grade being the denser weave. It works because it's outside the glass — it stops the energy before the window has to deal with it, which is something no interior shade can do. West-facing bedrooms and second-floor rooms over a garage are where it earns its keep in NJ, and it doubles as daytime privacy. It does darken the view, and that surprises people, so we show a sample against your own glass before we build anything.
Enhanced-visibility mesh — BetterVue, UltraVue, SeeVue and similar — uses finer yarns and a more open weave so the screen visually disappears and more air moves through. Phifer rates the UltraVue and SeeVue grades best in class for viewing clarity. This is what to put on the window you actually look out of: a bay in a living room, a kitchen window over a garden, the openings on the view side of a shore house. It is not the mesh for a door a cat can reach.
Drop it at the Garfield counter
Our shop is at 163 Midland Ave, Unit B in Garfield, the counter is walk-in, and screens are the single best thing to bring us. Almost every residential screen comes out without tools — double-hung half-screens lift and tilt out of the lower track, casement and awning screens release from clips or plungers on the interior side, slider screens lift up into the head track and swing free at the bottom. Stack them in a car and drive them over. Standard re-screens in common mesh are typically counter work; a full rebuild or a specialty mesh we don't have on the rack goes on the shop schedule.
Bring them all at once if you can. Screens are a batching job — the setup is the same whether we mesh one or fourteen, so a whole-house order handled in a single run is the cheapest form this work takes, and it's why we ask before quoting whether you want to do the two torn ones or the whole exterior. Label them if the house has several similar sizes; a strip of painter's tape on each frame with the room name saves you a scavenger hunt on re-hang.
If the frame is already destroyed and there's nothing to bring, bring the measurement instead, or bring the sash. For a new build we need the channel dimensions the screen sits in and which way the hardware faces — and if you're not sure how to measure it, hand us the whole sash and we'll size it at the counter. For anything fixed in place, anything above the first floor, or a whole-house order where you'd rather not handle fourteen frames, we come measure and install instead. Same mesh, same shop, different line on the quote.
A screen, a storm panel, and a combination unit are three different parts
This trips up more calls than anything else on this page, because on a lot of NJ housing all three live in the same exterior frame. A screen is mesh in a light frame and does one job: insects out, air in. A storm panel is glazed — glass or acrylic in a frame — and does the opposite job: it seals a second layer of still air outside the primary window for winter. They are not interchangeable, and a storm panel with a hole in it is not a screen problem.
A combination unit — the triple-track storm window standard on mid-century Cape Cods, ranches and colonials across Bergen, Passaic, Essex and Union — is one exterior frame carrying two glass panels and one screen in three separate tracks. You slide the glass down and the screen up in spring, reverse it in fall, and nothing ever comes off the house. When someone says the screen on their storm window is torn, this is almost always what they have, and the fix is to pull just the screen insert out of its track and re-mesh it. We service the screen insert and the glass panels of combination units and replace the individual panels when one cracks.
Storm doors carry their own version of this: most modern ones have interchangeable glass and screen panels, or a retractable screen hidden in the frame. Those inserts re-mesh the same way a window screen does. What they don't share is the frame — a storm door insert is sized to the door manufacturer's channel, so we measure the insert rather than the opening.
Door screens fail differently than window screens
A sliding patio screen door is the highest-mileage screen in a house and it fails at the hardware before it fails at the mesh. The frame is taller and lighter than it should be for what it does, it rides on two small wheels top and bottom, and the bottom track fills with grit. What you get is a door that binds, jumps the track, or leans out of square until the latch stops meeting the keeper. Re-meshing that door without touching the rollers just gets you a new screen on a door that still won't slide. We replace rollers, straighten or replace the track section, square the frame, re-mesh, and reset the latch as one job.
Hinged screen doors and the screen inserts in storm doors fail at the corners instead — the racking load of a door being pulled shut a few thousand times a year works the corner joints loose. Heavier extrusion, corner reinforcement, and a closer adjusted so the door isn't slamming are what stop the repeat call.
Retractable screens are their own product: the mesh lives rolled in a side cassette and pulls across on a track only when you want it. They suit doors that stay open most of the season and openings where a permanent screen would ruin the look of the door. When they fail it's the cassette spring, the bottom track, or the mesh having been let go too fast — all serviceable, none of it a standard re-screen.

On-site, we measure the channel each screen sits in, note the hardware type and which face it mounts to, and check the openings for anything that will fight the new screen: a bowed blind stop, a missing leaf spring, a track full of debris.
- 3Mesh selection with samples in handWe put physical mesh samples against your own glass before anything is cut. Solar and pet mesh both change how a window looks and how much light comes through, and that is a decision to make standing in the room, not off a website photo. Whole-house orders often mix: enhanced-visibility on the view side, pet mesh on the doors, solar on the west elevation.
- 4Fabrication at the shopRe-screens in stock mesh are usually done while the order is in the shop. New frames are cut from extrusion to your dimensions, corner-keyed, meshed and splined, and the hardware fitted. Specialty mesh and unusual extrusion profiles add lead time; we give you a date when you drop off, not after.
- 5Pickup or installDrop-offs get a call when they're ready. Install visits re-hang every screen, verify each one seats and latches in its own opening, and fix the small things that were keeping them from staying put — missing plungers, sprung leaf springs, a track that needed clearing.
