Half the windows in our Sewell house have gone cloudy. Is that dirt or damage?
Damage, and it is inside the glass where nothing will reach it. The seal that bonds the two panes at their edge has quit — expect 15 to 25 years out of one, which is exactly where the township's 1970s-1990s subdivisions now sit. The window stays where it is; only the glass comes out. Dimensions are taken at the house, the replacement is built within 2-5 business days, and setting it is roughly a half-hour job.
The sliding patio door on my 1980s Turnersville home barely moves. Repair or replace?
Usually repair. On the aluminum-framed sliders common through these subdivisions the door drags because the rollers have flattened and the bottom track has worn — both rebuildable without touching the frame. We replace the panel only when the frame has racked out of square or the sealed glass has also failed.
