Woodland Park — West Paterson until the 2009 rename — climbs from the Passaic River lowlands up the side of Garret Mountain, and its window work tracks the slope. A hole where something had struck an interior wall, cut back to a clean square and closed with a new piece of drywall, photographed by our crew before any tape or compound went on.
A patch needs something to hold it. The screw holes around the cut-out show how the new piece is fastened to what is behind the wall, so it sits flush with the wall instead of floating on its edges. Nothing is hidden yet at this stage: the seams are bare and the screw holes still have to be filled with compound before the wall can be sanded and primed.

The coat is much wider than the hole on purpose. Compound spread only as far as the patch dries as a raised square that shows once the wall is painted, so it is thinned gradually into the surrounding wall, a process called feathering. It still has to be sanded smooth before primer.
