Paramus is a fifteen-minute run north from our Garfield shop, and it is one of the most retail-dense towns in the country — Westfield Garden State Plaza at the Route 4 and Route 17 junction, the Bergen Town Center on Route 4 East, Paramus Park, and the Fashion Center all sit on the same commercial spine. What the malls obscure is that Paramus is a classic postwar Bergen County suburb: the median house dates to 1963, and the borough nearly quadrupled from roughly 6,000 to 23,000 residents between 1948 and 1958 as the old truck farms were subdivided. The first is highway and aircraft sound: Route 4 and Route 17 cross here carrying some of the heaviest traffic counts in the state, the Garden State Parkway runs through with exit 165 at Oradell Avenue, and a satellite-guided arrival pattern into Teterboro Airport put into effect on July 1, 2021 roughly tracks Route 17, so overflight adds to the corridor din.
