Wyckoff is a twenty-minute run northwest from our Garfield shop, a 6.65-square-mile Bergen township that voted itself out of the name Franklin Township in November 1926 and stayed farmland until the postwar building boom filled it in. That history sits in the housing: the median home dates to about 1965, so the stock is overwhelmingly mid-century detached single-family — colonials, Cape Cods, and ranches on wide lots. Two exposures shape the choices here. Water first: Goffle Brook's western branch bisects the township through the midsection, its main tributary Deep Voll Brook runs the Deep Voll Ravine, and Ho-Ho-Kus Brook drains the western side — all can overflow their banks in heavy rain, and when the remnants of Hurricane Ida came through in September 2021 the town's damage was mostly flooded basements plus downed trees. On the low blocks we steer below-grade openings toward vinyl hoppers or glass block, which shrug off the wet-dry cycle without rotting. Noise second: Route 208 re-enters Bergen County right here as a limited-access highway with interchanges at Grandview, Cedar Hill, and Russell Avenues, and homes back onto that corridor — laminated glass or an interior insert earns its keep on those streets.

My mid-century colonial still has its original windows and they stick and leak air — repair or replace?
On most 1950s-60s Wyckoff homes the honest answer is full replacement: single-pane sash and early aluminum frames conduct cold no matter how well you tune them, and insert vinyl drops into the existing opening without disturbing your siding or interior trim.
Our house backs onto Route 208 — will new glass actually quiet it?
Meaningfully, yes. The route runs grade-separated and limited-access right through town, and standard double panes let the low-frequency traffic drone through. Laminated glass, or an interior acoustic insert over your existing window, targets that band; we recommend it block by block, since most of Wyckoff sits far enough off the corridor not to need it.
The glass in my newer windows is foggy between the panes but the frames are solid — full replacement?
Usually not. When the frame and sash are sound we replace just the sealed insulated glass unit: we measure on the first visit, the IGU fabricates over the following days, then installs quickly. It's a common fix on the first-generation replacement windows many Wyckoff homes received years ago.
