Noise is the other: Route 4 cuts across the southern part of the city, I-95 clips the border near Leonia, and the CSX Northern Branch still runs freight through town, so bedrooms facing those corridors benefit from laminated glass or interior soundproof inserts. Water is the third factor on the low ground: Overpeck Creek and Flat Rock Brook drain the city, and frames on flood-adjacent blocks rot from the bottom rail up.

Our East Hill house still has its original wood windows, restore or replace?
The frames decide it, not the build date. Where jambs are square and the sash are solid, new cords, weatherstripping, and reglazing bring a century-old window back and keep the proportions the house was designed with. Where lower rails and sills have gone soft, an insert unit fits inside the existing frame without disturbing the interior trim. On the larger East Hill openings we grade it sash by sash at the measure visit.
The glass in our windows is foggy but the frames seem fine, is that a full replacement?
Usually not. When the frame and sash are sound we swap only the sealed insulated glass unit: one measure visit, fabrication in two to five business days, then about thirty minutes of install per window. It is the common fix on the first-generation replacement windows a lot of West Englewood and Liberty Road homes received decades ago.
We are near Route 4, can new windows actually cut the highway noise?
Meaningfully, yes. Route 4 and the nearby CSX freight line throw off low-frequency drone that standard double panes only partly stop. Laminated glass with mismatched pane thicknesses, or a soundproof insert mounted inside your existing window, targets exactly that band. We recommend it block by block, since much of Englewood sits far enough off the corridors not to need it.
